Members of Anjali’s Open Class have been invited to perform at the St Frideswide Civic Service in Christ Church Cathedral, University of Oxford, this October (2019). We are the first dance group ever to perform at the Cathedral’s long-running special annual service.
Each year, Christ Church Cathedral Oxford holds a St Frideswide civic service to which civic, political and community leaders are invited, along with a number of organisations from the charity and voluntary sector.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire is the lead organiser, alongside the Cathedral team from the Diocese of Oxford.
The theme for 2019 is ‘Creative Arts, Changing Lives’ and will focus on how the Arts can support and change lives. The shape of the service will largely be in accordance with past practice, but the details vary year by year. There will be poetry, live music, voice and speeches. When considering who might contribute to this year’s service, Anjali Dance Company was the first to be invited.
We have just finished creating a wonderful, site-specific dance piece to perform at Christ Church in this very special event. The piece features solos, partner work and duets, teams and full unison group dance. The cathedral is a challenging space which was not made for dance, so we have created something which turns those challenges into features. The performance is on Tuesday 22nd October.
